The new basketball court at the Traralgon Sports Stadium will be host to a number of Commonwealth Games basketball matches in March this year.

Mr Jenkins said he was extremely impressed with the improved facilities. "This is now a world class facility in our own backyard. It’s fantastic to think we will be sharing this with the international sporting community in just a few weeks time," Mr Jenkins said.

"This facility will be enjoyed by many upcoming local athletes thanks to the joint funding effort by the State Government and Latrobe City," Mr Jenkins said.

"Almost one million dollars has now been provided for this facility by the State Government, a long term investment in quality sports infrastructure for the region."

Latrobe City deputy mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that the redevelopment involved the removal of an ageing stadium which has been replaced with a modern facility twice the size.

"This will be a fabulous venue for Games’ competitors and visitors and something to be very proud of when the spotlight falls on our region. It’s thrilling to see the result of years of work and planning by a number of very dedicated people come to fruition," Cr Lougheed said.

"Many people have worked very hard to get the stadium to where it is today, it’s definitely something that they can be very proud of and it’s something the people of the region can be proud of too," Cr Lougheed said.

Cr David Wilson said that the creation of the new basketball court will have positive impacts for Traralgon and the entire Gippsland area.

"Sporting groups from all over the region will have a first class facility on their doorsteps. It cuts out hours of travelling which has until now been necessary to find facilities that meet the needs of many groups based in regional Victoria. It will also act as a major drawcard, bringing events to the region from all over the state.

"It’s not just the two days of Commonwealth Games competition; the new Traralgon Sports Stadium facilities incorporating a show court with a five-metre run off is designed with flexibility in mind. For training and less momentous matches, the area can be transformed into two side-by-side courts. The court area can also facilitate other sports. Other events which have already been considered include significant gymnastics competitions," Cr Wilson said.

Major structural work has now been completed, with retractable seating for over 1000 spectators now installed. Backboards and scoreboards are yet to be put in place; together with line marking for the Games to be undertaken, followed by several coats of sealant to enhance the playing surface.

Thursday 16 March will see preliminary matches between the England and Barbados men’s team and the Australian and Indian women’s team.

Preliminary matches will also be held on Friday 17 March between the New Zealand and Malta women’s team and the Indian and Nigerian men’s team.
