New energy for job security and investment certainty in the Valley

Proposed Energy from Waste plant: An innovative proposal that would create hundreds of jobs in the Latrobe Valley

By Portal Admin - 27th May 2018 - Back to News

An innovative proposal that would create hundreds of jobs in the Latrobe Valley is an opportunity for our region to lead the way in energy security and sustainability, The Nationals Candidate for Morwell Sheridan Bond has said.

Ms Bond was joined by Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh and Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath for a visit to Australian Paper’s Maryvale Paper Mill on Friday.

They were provided with an update on the proposed Energy from Waste plant, which has the potential to utilize up to 650,000 tonne of household waste that would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Ms Bond said Australian Paper’s proposed plant would be an exciting step forward for the Latrobe Valley.

"Australian Paper has built a name for itself as one of our region – and Victoria’s – leading innovators, particularly when it comes to the efficient and sustainable use of energy," Ms Bond said.

"Latrobe Valley businesses are embracing new technologies and innovation, paving the way for new job and investment opportunities in our community.

"I believe our manufacturers and timber mills are critical to the future prosperity of the Valley. If I’m elected in November, I’ll fight to ensure we don’t lose any more jobs to Daniel Andrews’ green agenda."

Mr Walsh said many businesses across country Victoria were struggling to meet the rising cost of energy and it was necessary to look at new ideas to diversify our energy sources and work towards pushing down energy prices and the cost-of-living.

"There’s some exciting innovation going on in the Latrobe Valley that is working towards new ways to secure our energy supply," Mr Walsh said.

"When energy prices skyrocket, it pushes up operational costs for business and risks the future stability of our workforce.

"Daniel Andrews and The Greens are fighting for the whims of the Fitzroy latte sippers.

"The Nationals will continue to fight to secure investment certainty and job security for our manufacturing and timber industries which play a vital role in supporting regional economies, like the Valley."
