Pet Registrations are Due Soon

Don’t leave it to the last minute to register your cat or dog. Bass Coast Shire Council pet registrations are due by 10 April 2012.

Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said registration renewals are sent to cat and dog owners currently listed on Council’s records and this serves as a reminder.

"I encourage owners to register their pets as there are a number of benefits for both owners and animals," Mr Piasente said.
"This is particularly true now that all cats and dogs over three months old, registered with Council for the first time, must be microchipped prior to registration.

"A microchip provides a permanent form of identification which can quickly reunite owners with lost or injured pets.

"This could literally save your pet’s life. If a pet is injured and a veterinarian needs to contact the owner urgently, a microchip means they can quickly identify the owner and contact them. This allows the owner to make decisions about the animal’s treatment," said Mr Piasente.

Mr Piasente added that registering your pet also has the potential to limit the charges that apply if it is caught wandering.

"If this happens owners are charged a release fee and $10 per day for each day the animal remains at Council’s animal shelter. Additional penalties also apply for non registered dogs and cats," Mr Piasente said.
