Latrobe City deputy mayor, Cr Sandy Kam, said that Japanese Day was a day for the whole community to enjoy exploring Japanese culture and discover more about Latrobe’s sister city, Takasago.

"We have strong links to our sister city in Takasago and this year we will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of that relationship. Events such as Japanese Day allow the wider community, who may not have had the opportunity to visit this amazing country, a closer contact with the extraordinary contrasts of the Japanese lifestyle.

"We see the mix of traditional and ultra-modern that makes Japan such a vibrant place and Kernot Hall will come alive with the sights, sounds and smells of Japanese culture. The program is designed to ensure that visitors will be given numerous opportunities to ‘experience’ Japan," Cr Kam explained.

Latrobe’s manager cultural liveability, David Elder, said that old favourites Wadaiko Rindo, would return with their crowd-pleasing Japanese drumming performance.

"Their energising display of drumming is mesmerising. The hall vibrates with the sound of their drums and their display is a visual spectacular showing off their stamina, strength and humour.

"The martial arts will be on display with Japanese karate demonstrations by the Traralgon Kyokushin Karate Club, and judo being presented by the Traralgon Judo Club.

"Many people also find the opportunity to sample Japanese cuisine, such as sushi and okonomiyaki an irresistible attraction at Japanese Day. There will also be many stalls and workshops featuring Japanese art and craft, intrinsic to the Japanese lifestyle for everyone to enjoy," Mr Elder said.

"Other stalls will offer a variety of Japanese products such as lollies and snacks and a host of intriguing, unusual products and gifts.

"For the children, there will be plenty of activities including Japanese animation films, model railway, games and competitions, such as the sumo suits, a jumping castle to enjoy and Japanese toys and art activities to try their hand at.

"The day will be a rewarding sensory experience for the community," Mr Elder concluded.

Japanese Day is sponsored by Latrobe City Council, Nippon Paper Group, TEPCO, and Loy Yang Power.
