Latrobe City acknowledges international students

The role of international students in Latrobe City was acknowledged during Education Week when Latrobe City hosted a welcoming reception at Century Inn for international students currently enrolled in local secondary and tertiary studies.

Nearly 30 international students, from China, Japan, the Philippines and Germany attended the function, along with their coordinators and host families.

Some students participating in the program, have been studying within Latrobe City for up to two years. There have been seven students each attending Gippsland Education Precinct and Traralgon Secondary College, with approximately 250 studying at Monash University at Churchill.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said the welcoming reception acknowledged the students who have come from overseas to study here. "It was a real honour for me to welcome them. They have chosen to study in our region, and they are taking full benefit of our educational facilities and expertise at all levels of learning in primary, post-primary, and tertiary, as well as in the occupational training area," Cr Price said.

"Importantly, it is through education that learning and understanding another culture takes place. This is more than just obtaining a qualification. Here we have international students living in our local community and sharing our lifestyles while they are learning. They are not only becoming proficient in their particular area of study, but also they are learning about the Latrobe City community," Cr Price added.

"The reception provided the perfect opportunity to reflect that hosting students from overseas also represents another aspect of the internationalisation of our municipality. Victoria’s regional and rural areas are now highlighted as ideal areas in which to live, and Latrobe City presents an excellent, safe and viable option which is now becoming more recognised, especially by students."

Cr Price added that the reception was also a great chance to formally acknowledge the students presence and to thank the host families, who for many secondary college students provide a safe and caring environment, so vital for those temporarily separated from their families.

"Students had a chance to meet each other and to mingle with the host families and to get together to share ideas and concerns. Some students revealed that they had experienced loneliness since leaving their homes, so this was also an opportunity to network and to express their special concerns.

"During the reception, students spoke warmly about their experiences here, commenting about the friendliness extended to them by the community. A few commented on how wonderfully noisy and active our classrooms are in comparison to schools in their home country," Cr Price said.

International Education Week is supported by the Victorian Department of Education and Training and all education providers. The week-long celebration recognised the increasing trend of Victorian and Australian education systems to highlight international awareness of the quality of schools and universities to deliver a rewarding and relevant education for students from overseas.
