International Day of People with DisAbilityVictory Park in Traralgon will come to life on Friday 1 December with music, drama and art to celebrate International Day of People with disAbility in Latrobe City. By Latrobe City Council - 28th November 2006 - Back to News The new Loy Yang Power Latrobe Community Soundshell will be the focus of the entertainment from 12 noon until 3.30pm featuring drama performances by the Curtains for Certain Ensemble, GETT Theatrical and iGAIN Drama. Music will be provided by It’s Only Paranoia, the Dalkeith Desperates Band and DJ Anthony.
As well as the action in the soundshell, people can contribute to a community mural which will depict the many ways people with a disability contribute to and participate in their community. Food and drinks will be available for purchase in Victory Park.
During the afternoon a ‘walk in the park’ will be held to raise awareness of young people with disability living in aged care facilities. People participating in the walk will take one step to acknowledge each of the 1,565 young people with disability who are living in aged care accommodation in Victoria. Information will also be handed out regarding government strategies and projects to relocate young people with a disability into alternate accommodation options should they choose to move out of aged care facilities.
Latrobe City’s Rural Access project officer, Bill Lawler, explained that 3 December each year has been declared International day of People with a disAbility by the United Nations. "On or near this day, activities are held world-wide to acknowledge the valued contribution people with a disability make to their community and to highlight ways of making our community more accessible and inclusive," Mr Lawler said.
"A steering committee was established in Latrobe City to plan activities for International Day of people with a disability in 2006. The steering Committee was made up of representatives from i-GAIN Quality Learning, Cooinda Hill, Moe Life Skills, the GippsTAFE Employment and Transitional Training Centre, Vision Australia, Gippsland Disability Resource Council, Gippsland Citizen Advocacy, Interact Jobplus, Regional Communication Service, Scopevic and the Department of Human Services.
"As well as the celebrations in Victory Park, shoppers in Stockland Plaza in Traralgon will be invited to take the Disability Awareness Challenge between 10 am and 12 noon. The challenge will consist of ‘hands on’ activities to raise awareness of a range of different disabilities. People who participate in the challenge will be awarded a certificate and will go into a draw for prizes,’ Mr Lawler added.
