Luminous Exhibition Enlightened By Collector’S TalkCurrently on show at Latrobe Regional Gallery is a stunning exhibition of contemporary indigenous paintings. The Gallery is honoured to be the only regional gallery in Victoria to showcase the exhibition ‘Luminous’. By Latrobe City Council - 24th November 2005 - Back to News Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that ‘Luminous’ was a collection of works from the Australian desert by contemporary Aboriginal artists and represents arguably one of the finest and most representative collections in private hands.
"Only the state art galleries and the National Gallery of Australia have more extensive collections. It has always been the collector Helen Read’s intention to both educate and share the enjoyment of such beautiful paintings," Ms Tegart explained.
"The title ‘Luminous’ suggests the influence of light and colour in the collection and the sense of tradition through the artist’s contemporary reading of the Dreaming stories from the selected regions," Ms Tegart concluded.
"The Helen Read collection has been offered as a resource to give greater access to a wider regional audience in order to create a heightened awareness of the different qualities of this contemporary indigenous work. Helen Read has not only maintained a direct relationship with the artists and their communities over a long period of time but has played a significant role in introducing other collectors to the art," Ms Tegart said.
The exhibition has been curated by Karen Mills (indigenous curator from NT) and consultant Ace Bourke formerly from Hogarth Galleries. It has been organised by Manly Art Gallery and is toured by Museums and Galleries NSW.
The artists exhibiting in the exhibition are Walangkura Napanangka, Sammy Apetyarr (Urapuntja Artists), Eubena Nampitjin (Warlayirti Artists), Elizabeth Nyumi (Warlayirti Artists), Bai Bai Sunfly Napangarti (Warlayirti Artists), Boxer Milner (Warlayirti Artists), Judy Napangardi Watson (Warlukurlangu Artists), Darby Jampijimpa Ross (Warlukurlangu Artists), Makinti Napanangka (Papunya Tula Artists), Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka (Papunya Tula Artists), Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi (Papunya Tula Artists), Ronnie Tjampitinpa (Papunya Tula Artists), George (Tjampu) Tjapaltjarri, Kathleen Ngal (Urapuntja Artists), Katungka Napanangka (Ikuntji Arts), Lorna Napurrula Fencer (Warnyaka Arts), Millie Skeen (Warlayirti Artists).
Helen Read will be giving a free talk at the Latrobe Regional Gallery on Tuesday 29 November at 11am. This is an excellent opportunity to hear Helen speak about the open dialogue she has created with artists and an understanding of the stories behind the extraordinary works in the exhibition.
The exhibition continues until Sunday 4 December.
