Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the Coalition Victorian Government was committed to the preservation of local history, and grateful for the hours contributed by historical societies in achieving that goal.

"The Boolarra Public Cemetery Trust and the Morwell Historical Society have both been successful in this grant program," Mr Northe said.

"The Boolarra Public Cemetery Trust received $3,500 to establish a website for the Boolarra Public Cemetery featuring burial information of over 450 internments available online.

"The Morwell Historical Society received $7,000 to produce a DVD documenting the history of Morwell and district from pre-European settlement to the present day.

"The DVD will trace major influences which have shaped our local history including: the advent of train travel; development of the coal and power industry; soldier settlements; post-war migration; industry shift from agriculture to manufacturing to service industries; and the recent growth of ethnic communities.

"The time and effort our community members put in to ensure our local history is preserved is commendable. Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley both have an abundance of local history and it is fantastic to see it preserved for future generations.

Premier of Victoria and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu said 58 Victorian community groups would undertake important local history projects this year thanks to more than $340,000 in grants through the Victorian Government’s Local History Grants program.

The projects include writing and publishing books, developing displays and exhibitions, oral histories, heritage trails and multimedia projects.

"The Victoria of today has been shaped by the aspirations and actions of millions of people and groups with a range of backgrounds – all with a fascinating story to share," Mr Baillieu said.

"These community-based projects are driven by volunteers, whether through historical societies, community museums, cultural centres or primary schools. These groups work hard to gather and preserve historical materials and memories, and are passionate about telling their local stories."
