Can you volunteer for the Southern University Games? From Monday 4 to Thursday 7 July this year, Latrobe City will host the Southern University Games, which will see some 2000 university students compete in thirteen team sports at venues around the municipality. By City of Latrobe - 6th April 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that volunteers were now being sought to help with a wide variety of tasks throughout the duration of the event.
"It is anticipated that some 200 volunteers and officials will be required to make the organisation of these Games a true success. Volunteers will be required to help set up, and pull down equipment, check registration tags and assist the competition manager with the running of the event.
"Other areas for volunteers to get involved include sports administration, media and marketing, events operations and information technology," Cr Lougheed explained.
Cr Lougheed said that competitors would take part in Australian Rules football, badminton, baseball, basketball, netball, rugby union 7s, soccer, softball, squash, table tennis, touch football, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.
"Whilst it would be helpful to have some sporting knowledge to fulfil some roles, there are many more positions which require just enthusiasm. Obviously, if you are keen to help in the set up and pulling down of event equipment, you would need to be fairly fit, otherwise there are roles to be filled for people of all ages and backgrounds," Cr Lougheed explained.
Cr Lougheed said that the Southern University Games is a qualifying event for the Australian University Games which are held every September. The Southern University Games attracts 17 member universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
"The competing students will embark on three days of high competition sport followed nightly by an action-packed social program to be held at various locations around the Latrobe Valley.
"This event will give a huge economic boost bringing such vast numbers of competitors and supporters to the Valley, and will further enhance our growing reputation as a major sporting region," Cr Lougheed added
"We are eager to hear from any members of the public who can volunteer to help with any aspects of the Games and be part of the team responsible for organising another successful sporting event in the Valley," Cr Lougheed concluded.
