Home to Bairnsdale Senior Citizens Club, the Bairnsdale Football Club and the West Bairnsdale Cricket Club it has been called the Boolarumah Centre.

One of a number submitted for consideration by the Bairnsdale City Oval Committee of Management it means ‘a place to play.’

East Gippsland Mayor, Cr Mendy Urie said she was pleased with the selection of an entirely appropriate and relevant Aboriginal name.

"I am confident the name will have community appeal and the centre will become widely known as an excellent facility for a variety of functions and activities," she said.

"It is a top class and long overdue venue that will help attract major events and activities to the city."

Cr Urie said she was especially pleased that the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens Club Inc was one of the principal user groups of the new centre because for them it is an ideal, comfortable and up to date venue for their activities.

"For the sporting clubs it also provides a modern and ideal before and after the game venue that can play an important roles in expanding their memberships," she said.

The new Bularumah Centre caters for 400 people standing or 220 seated and provides a sound stage as well as full support facilities including a commercial kitchen, cool room, bar and other amenities.

Of the $1.29 million total cost for the new centre and renovations to the adjacent sports pavilion, East Gippsland Shire contributed $543,000, Sport and Recreation Victoria, $443,000; Bairnsdale Football Club $150,000; Bairnsdale City Oval Committee of Management, $75,000 and Commonwealth Government Community Water Grants, $29,000.

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said the Boolarumah Centre made the Bairnsdale City Oval the equal of any regional facility in the State and better than most.

"As well as being an excellent venue to support regional sporting activities it will be an important community asset as we continue to grow our region," he said.
