John Landy AC, MBE, Governor of Victoria will be at Monash University Gippsland Campus on Wednesday, June 9 to celebrate the completion of the 13.5 metre ‘Climbing Tower’.

The triangular shaped tower has been constructed to simulate a rock face for climbing and abseiling. The climbing tower complements a 2 hectare timbered area which also currently contains the high and low Challenge Ropes Course utilised by Sport and Outdoor Recreation students, schools and community groups for adventure training and leadership development. The Governor will be arriving at the Gippsland Campus at 2pm and while on campus will also be touring the state of the art teaching facilities in the School of Nursing.

The Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Brian Mackenzie will be overseas during the next few weeks visiting Universities in Canada and will be joined by Dr Harry Ballis, Head, School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan where they will complete an agreement for the recruitment of students, who will finish their journalism degree at the Gippsland Campus. Further opportunities for student exchange programs in Education, Nursing and Communications will be discussed at the various Canadian Universities. Professor Mackenzie will then travel to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to take part in a graduation ceremony of students in the Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) program that is sponsored in PNG by AusAid.

The Latrobe and Wellington Women in Business Network (WIBN), will be celebrating its achievements so far, and its new independent status, at a function for members and friends at the Century Inn in Traralgon on June 10. In 2002, the Victorian Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development, through its streetLife program, provided funds for the establishment of a local women’s network in Gippsland. WIBN has provided an opportunity for local women in business to talk to each other and exchange information and experience.

Renowned freelance historian and regular writer for ‘The Age’, Humphrey McQueen will be guest speaker at the Institute for Regional Studies (IRS) seminar on Thursday, June 10 from 1-2pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room. Mr Humphrey will discuss ‘All Capital is Social’ highlighting, how does social capital differ from the capital in capitalism, and was Margaret Thatcher wrong to say that there is no such thing as society, only individuals and their families? This seminar is open to the general public.

• Making the Grade

Primary Education students from the Gippsland Campus are among the 31 Monash University students who have left on a three week teaching stint in the Cook Islands. The students, in their third year of a four year degree course will be teaching at six primary schools and three secondary schools on the main island of Rarotongza.
