Community E-Waste Recycling Initiative Launched In Gippsland

Local member for Morwell, Russell Northe MP, today congratulated Lifeline Gippsland on finding a practical solution to a modern waste problem at the launch of a new electronic waste recycling service for Gippsland.

"This is an excellent example of how the best solutions can be found in our own communities - it shows how waste traditionally destined for landfill can be recycled and used again," Mr Northe said.

Lifeline Gippsland e-Recycling collects a range of e-waste, including computers, TVs, DVD players and mobile phones for re-use and recycling.

The initiative will also help to fund Lifeline’s counselling and other community services in the region through the sale of recycled e-waste components and the small collection fee.

"Lifeline Gippsland provides a valuable service to our community, and through this new recycling initiative, they will be able to raise more funds to continue their great work in the region," said Mr Northe.

Around 96 per cent of all materials collected are recycled, with around 8 – 10 tonnes processed every month.

The service has also provided employment for one person (previously a volunteer) and a new community enterprise, "Geek e chic" which creates jewellery from e-waste, has also been set up.

The Victorian Government Sustainability Fund and Latrobe City Council provided funding to Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group (GRWMG) to support a business trial for the recycling venture. GRWMG then partnered with Lifeline Gippsland to deliver the trial.

Dismantled and sorted e-waste was sent to project partner PGM Refiners who recovered and processed a range of precious metals and other materials.

The success of the trial prompted the establishment of the ongoing e-waste service for the region.
