Latrobe City Council is establishing an ‘Italian Desk’, which will facilitate business opportunities between Italy and the Latrobe Valley.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Latrobe City had reached an agreement to provide a virtual Italian Chamber of Commerce presence in the municipality, with the aim of helping businesses who wish to export or import products or services between Australia and Italy.

"The Italian Chamber of Commerce promotes bilateral trade between the two countries and having a presence in Latrobe will facilitate local businesses who wish to gain information and assistance in international trade. The Chamber will give advice to those wishing to attend trade fairs, or generally provide a consultancy service for organisations who are looking at the import or export market," Cr Middlemiss said.

Cr Middlemiss pointed out that the link between the Latrobe Valley and Italy was not new. "Settlers from Italy were major contributors to the local community through participation in the construction and operation of the power industry," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Many businesses within Latrobe City have their genesis from Italian migrants who used their former and locally accumulated skills to provide goods and services to the community. Italian-born people and those born into Italian families form a large cultural percentage of Latrobe City's population," Cr Middlemiss continued.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Hancock, said that Italy is a large importer of raw materials and produce, and offers a diverse range of business opportunities to Australian companies who might be looking for European markets for their agricultural or mineral products. "Local companies such as specialists in the engineering or aviation industries could also benefit from the Chamber’s helping hand into the Italian market," Mr Hancock said.

"This is a very exciting development for Latrobe. It’s entirely different from a sister-city relationship, as the Italian Desk will be an arrangement purely concentrating on trade.

"Some of the trade fairs the Italian Chamber of Commerce has been involved in recently or in the near future are the Fieragricola/Agrifood International Agricultural Exhibition in Verona, in March; the Vinitaly International Wine & Spirits Exhibition; Marmomacc International Exhibition of Marble Stone and Technology, in October; and the Fieracavalli International Horse Fair and Exhibition of Equestrian Activities and Equipment in Verona, in November. Representation at events such as these may open new opportunities for local business," Mr Hancock said.

Companies wishing to consider undertaking business with Italy are invited to contact Bill Barber at Invest Latrobe, telephone 1300 367 700, who will arrange contact through the Italian Chamber of Commerce.

An inaugural forum will take place at the Italian Australian Sporting Club of Gippsland, Princes Highway Morwell on Thursday 8 May at 2pm. Any persons wishing to attend should register their interest by contacting Kylie O’Brien at Latrobe City, telephone 1300 367 700.
