Intriguing art FOUND at Latrobe Regional Gallery

Why do we have collections and pick up objects that catch our eye? These are the questions asked by Latrobe Regional Gallery’s new exhibition, The FOUND Project.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 29th September 2004 - Back to News

The FOUND Project was created in response to a friendship formed by local resident, Kelly Boucher, and Indian art student, Mithu Sen, whilst studying at Glasgow School of Art in the year 2000. The two women documented their days in Scotland using the objects that they found on their trip, intending to exchange their work once it was completed.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that the project originally aimed to ensure that an ongoing artistic relationship, strengthened by simple cross cultural exchange, was maintained between the two girls.

"The FOUND Project was very successful, and extremely inspiring, and it grew to involve 14 different artists, all of whom worked on the project with Kelly Boucher each month from August 2003 until August 2004. Many local artists are included in the exhibition, including Susan Purdy, Alison Jean Mayer, Rodney Forbes, Mark McDean, Susan Shingles, Sherryn McIvor and Sarah Adams. Melbourne based artists Gracia Haby, Louise Jennison, Megan McPherson, Marian Crawford, Joseph Berto and Wendy Hutchison are also featured in the project," Ms Tegart said.

"The FOUND Project is an exhibition of works on paper about the relationship between collector, object and place. Through the interpretation of objects found on daily journeys, a visual map can be constructed."

Ms Tegart explained that the objects used in the project, whether natural or man made, trash or treasure, are signposts of memories and triggers for past experiences.

"Objects become souvenirs and are located within time and place through the act of recollection. The project is a documentation of the everyday, a collection of finds and an intentional search. In recognising how fragile life is and how quickly it can begin to crumble, the unnoticed and the mundane are elevated to objects of significance and even beauty.

The FOUND Project will be exhibited at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 31 October. The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The Gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
