Businesses urged to expand potential through good communication

The ‘Good Communication Is Good Business’ project will be launched in Latrobe City at an information session being held from 6pm – 7.30pm at Latrobe City Service Centre in Kay Street Traralgon on Tuesday 2 May.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th April 2006 - Back to News

The project will be launched by Vici Funnel, Scope CEO, and Paul Buckley, Latrobe City CEO, as part of the 2006 Gippsland Innovation Festival. Business proprietors or managers are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

The ‘Good Communication Is Good Business’ project is part of the broader ‘Good Access is Good Business’ project and aims to help business owners and their staff communicate with customers who find it hard to use or understand speech.

Latrobe City’s Rural Access Worker, Bill Lawler, said the project will also raise community awareness of forms of communication other than speech such as speech-generating devices, writing, communication books and boards, community request cards and sign language.

"Businesses across Latrobe are being invited to participate in ‘Good Communication is Good Business’ by displaying an A4 sized poster in their shop front. The poster has the name and logo of the business, a picture symbol of the business and one or two Auslan (Australian Sign Language) signs describing the business. Staff will be encouraged to welcome people with complex communication needs into their business.

"People with difficulty speaking or understanding speech will recognise these communication-friendly businesses and become regular customers," Mr Lawler said.

"A regional communication service will also offer businesses in Latrobe City ongoing support to communicate with people who have complex communication needs."

Mr Lawler said that the cooperation and participation from the organisations involved in the project will help make Latrobe a more accessible and inclusive community. "While the initial launch will take place in Traralgon, we are planning a similar information session in Morwell and Moe later in the year, and it is hoped that the project can be a model for other regions across the state," Mr Lawler said

The Good Communication is Good Business project launch is part of the 2006 Australian/ Gippsland Innovation Festival. The Festival is an annual national event which runs from the 26 April to the 14 May 2006. The Australian Innovation Festival highlights the importance of applying new technology and innovation.

"Adapting to change and embracing innovation can continue to drive economic growth and international competitiveness for Australia. The same principle is embraced by the ‘Good Communication is Good Business’ project, where businesses and potential customers both benefit from better communication," Mr Lawler said.

The Good Communication is Good Business Project is supported by Latrobe City, Traralgon Chamber of Commerce, Department of Human Services, Westernport Latrobe Regional Communication Service, Cooinda Hill ATSS, Latrobe Special Developmental School, iGAIN quality learning, and members of the deaf community.

An Auslan interpreting service will be available for the launch.
