Taizhou mayoral delegation visits Latrobe

As part of its long standing sister city connection, Latrobe City hosted a delegation led by the Mayor of the City of Taizhou this week.

This is the first time a Mayor from Taizhou has visited and marks a significant milestone for the sister city relationship which commenced in May 1998 and was formalised by Latrobe City Council in March 2000.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said it was a great honour to host the Mayor.

"Mayor Mao Weiming was inducted as Mayor early last year and showed great interest in Latrobe City in January this year when he hosted Latrobe City officials as part of the youth band tour. As leader of the visiting delegation, he and other officials were keen to learn more about Latrobe City’s economy and the potential for business exchanges," Councillor White said.

"Latrobe City has hosted seven delegations from Taizhou since 2000. These have shown interest in Latrobe City’s healthcare and education facilities. In September 2002, a delegation inspected our sporting facilities as part of a planned sports exchange program involving teams competing in table tennis and basketball."

The Mayoral delegation visited Powerworks, PaperLinx, the Gippsland Education Precinct, Lyndale Poultry Farm, Nordical Diving and a local dairy farm.

Cr White said that with the Gippsland Education Precinct nearing completion, opportunities existed to target local and overseas students with the seamless education linkages between secondary and vocational education.

"Part of our marketing will be into those schools in Taizhou with whom our secondary colleges have sister school relationships," Councillor White said.

While in Latrobe City, the two Mayors agreed to an on-going commitment to the sister city relationship by co-signing a document whereby the connection will promote better relations between the cities through programs with mutual interests in education, culture and economic development.

"The Latrobe City Youth Band visited Taizhou in January this year and our secondary colleges have had sister school relationships since 1999. Our sister city relationship is now highly developed through trust, confidence and greater understanding," Councillor White concluded.
