A Volleyball First For LatrobeLatrobe Valley Volleyball is hosting the first ever National Australian Volleyball League match in Latrobe City, on Saturday 8 November at the Moe Newborough Sports Centre. By Latrobe City Council - 4th November 2003 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that Latrobe City was proud to be hosting such a high class sporting event.
"This event is a spin-off from the excellent relationship which we have developed with Monash University. By working in partnership, we look forward to making this an annual event and bringing other great sporting events to Latrobe in the future," Cr Middlemiss said.
Councillor Middlemiss congratulated the Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association for their hard work and commitment.
"The Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association is to be commended for their efforts in organising this event, and we encourage the community to come along and watch the highest standard of volleyball that Australia has to offer," Cr Middlemiss added.
Secretary of the Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association, Howard Williams, said that this was a fantastic opportunity for local people to see two high profile volleyball matches.
"The Australian Volleyball Federation’s policy is to schedule local head-to-head matches in regional areas like Latrobe, in an attempt to promote this Olympic sport and make it easier for country people to experience volleyball first hand," Mr Williams explained.
"This National Volleyball event will see Monash University take on Melbourne University Renegades in two top class matches. At this stage of the Australian Volleyball season, both the men’s and women’s teams of both sides are equally matched on the ladder, so spectators can expect to see two very exciting matches," Mr Williams concluded.
The women’s match will commence at 12 noon, with the men’s competition taking place at 2pm.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 concession, $2 for students and primary school-aged children will be admitted free of charge. All proceeds from the matches will go towards the development of volleyball in Gippsland.
