Latrobe City Named A Finalist In Premier’S Sustainability Awards 2011 Premier’S Sustainability Awards 2011 Latrobe City and global environmental engineering and consulting firm MWH, which was commissioned by Latrobe City, By Latrobe City - 18th May 2011 - Back to News have been named joint finalists in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards in the Local Government category, for the policy, Positioning Latrobe City for a Low Carbon Emissions Future. The awards recognise Victorian businesses, institutions, communities and individuals that are working toward a sustainable Victoria.
Latrobe City’s Mayor, councillor Darrell White, explained that the policy is the foundation for Latrobe City Council to play a key role in providing leadership in representing the broader interests of its community on issues relating to the development of the energy industry.
"It provides Latrobe City Council with an overarching framework by which to systematically overcome the challenges and maximise the opportunities being presented by carbon emission reduction legislation.
"The policy is the first of its kind developed by an Australian Council and ensures that Latrobe City, and the Gippsland region, are in a position to lead the transformation; at both local community and regional level.
"The policy includes analysis and an action plan for three key themes that underpin it, pursuing and realising opportunities; contingency planning; and working together," Cr White said.
Over a twelve month period, Councillors, council officers, key stakeholders and the MWH project team worked to identify implications of a low carbon future and to design strategies to ensure that the Latrobe City economy continues to prosper under future carbon emissions legislation. Council formally adopted the policy in April 2010.
"Being named a finalist is great recognition for the work that has been undertaken here at Latrobe City, in conjunction with MWH, to ensure that our community is ready for the transition to a low carbon future.
"We are very pleased and excited about being named a finalist for the awards and we are looking forward to the awards ceremony in June," Cr White concluded.
The winners from all categories will be announced at a ceremony at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on Thursday 9 June 2011.
