38Th Annual Morwell Volleyball TournamentLatrobe Valley Volleyball association will host 32 teams in its annual invitation tournament next weekend. By Latrobe Valley Volleyball Inc - 23rd October 2003 - Back to News Traditionally the teams come from across Gippsland and Melbourne, association secretary Howard Williams said. This year we have a greater spread of Division two teams including a couple of mixed teams from the Volleyball Victoria social competitions in Melbourne that have entered the Morwell Tournament for the first time, Williams explained. We hope to feature a new mixed division next year, Williams added.
Melbourne University Renegades and Latrobe Valley are back to take on last year’s champions Bairnsdale in men’s division one, while eight teams will contest the top women’s division with Latrobe Valley, Bairnsdale, Korumburra and Wonthaggi taking on metropolitan teams. Danny Anderson, the Latrobe Valley men’s coach, is quietly confident that his team can build on their recent country championships experience and make it to the final for the first time in some years. The enthusiasm amongst the women has resulted in a strong Latrobe Valley women’s team in division one with another team in division two, said coach Susan Lloyd. The junior divisions will see this year’s Edison Mission Energy Gippsland Sports Academy teams try out in competition for the first time. They will be up against local teams and from the Victorian Institute of Sport and top Melbourne schools. Games get underway at 9.00AM Saturday at the Morwell Leisure Centre and continue all day until 9.30PM. On Sunday the action begins again at 9.00AM. The junior finals begin at 2.50PM and the seniors at 4.00PM.
