Koorie Elders Planned Activity Group launchedA Koorie Elders Planned Activity Group has been launched in Latrobe City to provide older people in Latrobe’s Koorie community with greater opportunities for social networking and improved lifestyles. By Latrobe City Council - 19th July 2005 - Back to News Twenty-one elderly indigenous people recently attended Latrobe City’s launch of the Planned Activity Group, which comprised a luncheon and information session held at PowerWorks.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said the Latrobe City Koorie Elders Planned Activity Group was one of a number of groups now flourishing around the state. "Groups already operate in Shepparton, Orbost, Lakes Entrance and in other regions of Victoria; and it’s terrific that our own community now has its own," Cr Lougheed said.
"These structured groups are a recognition that many people living in rural indigenous communities are socially isolated through factors such as public transport. It’s important that indigenous people are encouraged to network among themselves, and are enabled to share culture and explore ways to further their own health and wellbeing. These groups provide that opportunity," Cr Lougheed explained.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the Department of Human Services was to be congratulated on recognising the need for such a program and providing the necessary funding for Latrobe City to auspice and implement such a program.
"It’s also important to recognise the work that our own officers and members of our indigenous community have undertaken in researching the best methodology to introduce the program locally, and in spreading the word to prospective members of a group about the benefits," Mr Buckley said.
Latrobe City’s Home and Community Care Koorie Liaison Officer, Samantha Parson-Fenton, said the group would meet every second Thursday in Morwell.
"Participants will be able to enjoy morning and afternoon tea as well as a hot two-course lunch. There will also be a light exercise program, with social interaction provided by the group," Ms Parson-Fenton said.
"Activities such as card games, board games, and crosswords are being organised at the Elders’ Centre. We’re also discussing possible outings such as a Melbourne market day, fishing and camping trips, the theatre, and an annual ball featuring a Koorie band," Ms Parson-Fenton explained.
"We’re very excited about the group and we’ve received some excellent feedback. We hope to have some interesting and fun activities on the calendar which should appeal to all tastes. Transportation to the venue can be arranged too," Ms Parson-Fenton said.
