Gallery Director, Jacqui Hemsley, said that weaving was one of the oldest and most classic of art making media.

"Generated from necessity, this most elegant of handcrafts links the functional and the sculptural using natural fibres. The use of natural fibres and materials like canes and grasses creates the most unique and individual pieces.

"This workshop will explore the use of cane, sea grass and other plant material to weave a small round bowl," Ms Hemsley explained.

"Pat Dale has exhibited in major craft exhibitions and is the author of ‘Basketry and Weaving with Natural Materials’. Ms Dale incorporates natural plants and she utilises both conventional and unconventional techniques and styles," Ms Hemsley added.

Suitable for beginners to intermediate weavers and most materials will be supplied. Cost for this full day workshop is $44 for non members and $40 for Friends members. The workshops start at 11am and finishes 4pm. Tea and coffee will be supplied.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am – 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, contact the gallery on 5128 5700, fax 5128 5706 or email lrg@latrobe.vic.gov.au
