State Should Do More To Support Sewer Schemes

The State Government should provide more assistance for sewerage and wastewater systems in coastal areas of Gippsland, according to Eastern Region MP Peter Hall.

By Peter Hall - 6th June 2007 - Back to News

On a recent tour of his electorate, Mr Hall discussed aspects of such schemes in South Gippsland.

He said limits imposed by the State Government were affecting the implementation of effective schemes in parts of South Gippsland.

"The fact that the government has directed that the contribution from users be capped at $800 per household is placing a great deal of financial pressure on South Gippsland Water, the local water authority, to implement those schemes," Mr Hall said.

"Obviously the burden of all costs cannot rest with the residents, so there is some benefit to the cap, but at the same time it is asking too much for local authorities to put more into such schemes, as this cost would go back to the residents anyway.

"It is an area that the government should put more resources into to assist the local water authorities in the supply of sewerage and wastewater services."

Mr Hall said this was a common issue for country communities.

"The South Gippsland Council acknowledged that some work is being undertaken in towns like Loch, Nyora, Poowong, Meeniyan and Yanakie; they are all on schedule and works should be done in the next couple of years. It would be great to have those townships sewered, but at the same time it is a great cost burden to all of the water users in the area."
