A three hour workshop presented by Latrobe City as part of the Innovation Festival, showcased the City’s Indigenous Employment Program strategy to twenty human resource managers.

The managers came from a number of organisations throughout Gippsland including East Gippsland Shire Council, Wellington Shire Council, Department of Human Services, DEST, training companies and indigenous organisations.

Latrobe City Council’s Indigenous Employment Co-ordinator, Joanne Brunt, who presented the workshop, spoke about the history of the Braiakaulung Committee, the Statement of Reconciliation that Latrobe City committed to, and the various strategies that were used in the implementation of the employment strategy.

Ms Brunt explained the employment strategy contained a specifically designed pre-employment program delivered by indigenous trainers that included a strong mentoring base, a focus on matching skills and interest with jobs, and entry at different levels into a diverse range of employment.

"A key element of the program was the strong support framework put in place. A cross-cultural awareness training program also encouraged a positive attitude to the program by supervisors and other staff throughout the organisation," Ms Brunt said.

"The program also successfully involved a network of parties outside of Council including DEWR, job networking and apprenticeship services, and training providers, Ms Brunt added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the information session had been described as very informative, and guests found the information useful as they were currently developing similar employment programs in their organisation.

"Latrobe City’s Indigenous Employment Program has proved to be a great success. Council is proud that the program has become a model that has applications for other communities. The enthusiasm of those attending the workshop demonstrated there is keen interest in what has been achieved in this municipality, and what can be achieved elsewhere," Cr Middlemiss said.
