Eva West Memorial Scholarship Award presentedThe Latrobe City Trust has awarded the 2001 Eva West Memorial Scholarship By Latrobe City Council - 28th March 2001 - Back to News The Latrobe City Trust has awarded the 2001 Eva West Memorial Scholarship, to Traralgon resident Kristy Henry. The former Traralgon Secondary College student was one of three candidates nominated for the $1,000 scholarship by the College last year.
Trustee, Councillor Lisa Proctor, said Kristy was awarded her scholarship by the Trust given her academic achievements in Year 12, and her intention to undertake business-related tertiary studies in 2001. Kristy subsequently attained excellent results in her VCE and is currently studying Tourism Management at University.
“The Trustees were pleased to award this year’s scholarship to Kristy. Not only did she meet the selection criteria academically, but the selection panel was impressed with her personal qualities, and her proven ability and determination to balance her studies with her work commitments and community involvement,” Cr Proctor said.
Cr Proctor said the Eva West Memorial Scholarship was established to encourage the advancement of young women in business.
“The late Eva West was a pioneer who realised a number of notable achievements in her lifetime. She was one of the first women to qualify as an accountant in Victoria and was the first female Shire Secretary in Victoria. Eva West was born in Traralgon in 1888, and throughout her life was active in the community, and epitomised good citizenship. She was awarded the MBE in 1958 in recognition of her service to the community. Eva West died in 1969,” Cr Proctor said.
The Eva West Memorial Fund is one of several funds managed by the Latrobe City Trust for the benefit of individuals and charitable bodies within the Latrobe community. The Trust is a fully registered charitable trust, independent of Council, and donations greater than $2 are tax deductible. Further information about the Latrobe City Trust is available from Mark Brady at Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.
