Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre Development Underway
Latrobe City Council has commenced planning work to develop the $46 million Regional Aquatic Centre for Traralgon.
Mayor, Cr Kellie O’Callaghan said that despite a concept plan having been developed in 2013, Council would be required to revisit this considering the opportunity to expand the scope of the project."Council originally planned to construct a $30 million Aquatic Centre - we now have $46 million to develop this facility – clearly some rethinking and detailed design work needs to occur.
"Project planning and engagement discussions will be had with Councillors in early October.
"Due to the new opportunity to consider additional elements and components, we anticipate the commencement of community consultation in early 2018.
"We understand that this project is very dear to the heart of the community and we are confident that the community will want to have their say and design these additional elements with Council.
"We understand that some in the community are wondering why construction hasn’t commenced immediately - the reality is that those plans are no longer aligned to the budget and aspiration of the project and we need to develop new ones.
"Our view is that this task requires careful and diligent planning and consideration.
"Constructing a Regional Aquatic Facility is an enormous honour and a privilege. We will only get to do this once and we need to move forward carefully, cautiously and responsibly.
"We are not prepared to leap forward in haste to satisfy a desire of some in the community.
"Of course it is important to note that Council has six major projects underway at the moment and that we will be staggering their delivery to ensure a smooth and steady flow of work into the local economy.
"In addition to the Regional Aquatic Centre for Traralgon, Council is also delivering the upgrade to the Morwell Recreation Reserve, the upgrade of the Traralgon Sports Stadium, the upgrade of the Traralgon Sports and Entertainment Centre, Ted Summerton Reserve and the Traralgon Tennis Centre.
"All of these projects are great investments in the liveability of our local community and an opportunity to boost the local economy and jobs."
