Joint taskforce being discussed to retain Rocklea

The formation of a joint government and Latrobe City taskforce has been mooted by Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss as an option for seeking a new operator for the Rocklea plant in Moe.

By Latrobe City Council - 22nd October 2003 - Back to News

Cr Middlemiss said Latrobe City had already discussed the options for such a taskforce with the Member for Narracan, Ian Maxfield. "The Member for McMillan, Christian Zahra had also offered his assistance and will seek support from the Federal Government," Cr Middlemiss said.

"In the first instance we will be working with the appointed receiver to explore all options for retaining the business in Moe. Our first concern will be to try and save the jobs," Cr Middlemiss said.

"We are all extremely disappointed that Rocklea has been forced into receivership and concerned for those who make their livelihoods from working there.

"Government policies such where a Latrobe Valley business pays more for power than a similar business established in Footscray, act as a disincentive to a rural-based business such as Rocklea," Cr Middlemiss said.

"The further lowering of textile tariffs announced by the Federal Government recently, can also be considered extremely unhelpful for any businesses struggling to remain sustainable in the textile industry.

"It is important that the Federal Government realises the impact such a decision has on a community such as ours, and takes responsibility for minimising the hurt and harm for those affected by their policies.

"We will work with both governments to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities," Cr Middlemiss added.
