Events calendar to highlight accessibilityThe ‘Experience the Power of Events in Latrobe’ calendar will soon provide information about the accessibility of local events for people with a disability. By Latrobe City Council - 19th September 2003 - Back to News Organisers registering an event with Events Latrobe are now given a registration form that asks them to provide relevant information on event accessibility. The details provided on the returned forms will be included in the calendar.
Icons will be placed next to each event in the calendar to indicate the availability of accessible parking, accessible toilet facilities, hearing augmentation equipment and the general accessibility of the venue.
Rural Access Project Officer, Bill Lawler, said that the inclusion of the ‘access icons’ in the calendar has the potential to increase attendance numbers at community events, as people with disabilities will be more likely to attend if they know for certain that they will get the assistance that they require.
"For some people with a disability, knowing in advance about the accessibility of venues and the availability of suitable parking and toilet facilities is essential for getting out and about and having a good time," Mr Lawler said.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said the development of the access icons on the Events calendar was a proactive initiative which Latrobe City Council, in conjunction with the Events Latrobe and Latrobe City Community Development Strategy teams, felt was very important to provide.
"Not only is information about access important for people with disabilities, but having to provide the information on accessibility is also important for the event organisers themselves. It acts as a reminder that events need to be made accessible to people of all abilities. By completing the registration form, event organisers self-evaluate how accessible their event is," Cr Middlemiss said.
"It is also important for people of varying abilities attending events to be able to identify accessibility features. Different facilities are required for different reasons. For example, the provision of hearing augmentation equipment is essential for people who are hearing impaired, whereas the suitability for wheel chair access will be important for others."
The Experience the Power of Events in Latrobe calendar will feature the access icons from October onwards. Copies of the calendar will be available from the Latrobe Visitor Information Centre, Latrobe Citizen Service Centres, Latrobe City accommodation providers and local radio and television stations.
