Women’S Community Leadership Workshops

The Gippsland Women’s Local Government Association (GWLGA) is inviting local women to attend Community Leadership Workshops.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th July 2007 - Back to News

The one-day workshops are being held in Traralgon on 22 July, 16 September and 21 October.

The topics are emotional intelligence and leadership in the workplace, strategic planning and networking, and good governance and conflict resolution.

Each workshop costs $75 and includes lunch and refreshments.

GWLGA Secretary, Christina Lovinson thanked the Department of Victorian Communities (DVC) and GippsTAFE for making the workshops possible.

"As a result of the DVC grant, we were able to subsidise some of the cost of the three workshops," she said.

Hear the women of afghanistan

Afghan refugee and member of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), Sohaila, will be speaking in Inverloch on Sunday 29 July.

The afternoon has been organised by South Gippsland Rural Australians for Refugees.

The talk begins at 2pm at the Bunurong Environment Centre in Ramsay Boulevard. Afternoon tea is provided for a gold coin donation. All funds raised will be donated towards RAWA activities.

RAWA is a not-for-profit organisation that runs schools, orphanages, health care clinics and a refugee camp in Pakistan.

It manages programs for handicraft development and sales, small farms, widows forced into prostitution through poverty and aid distribution for refugees.

Event speaker, Sohaila, was born in Kabul, Afghanistan.

She fled with her family to Pakistan in 1991 when her father was seriously injured by a rocket explosion during intense Mujahideen fighting.

Sohaila attended school in Afghanistan and Pakistan then joined the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA).

Sohaila began teaching literacy classes and primary education.

She is now a significant RAWA member and in charge of a RAWA school.

Sohaila is studying computer science and will graduate this year as a software engineer.

Looking for a way to strengthen your club?

GippSport, in conjunction with SportEd, will be conducting a free Mentoring workshop at the Traralgon RSL on Monday 16 July from 6-9pm.

Mentoring has been recognised as a great way to support and train volunteers in many roles including club administration, coaching and officiating.

Program Coordinator with GippSport, David Roberts, said mentoring is also a great way to develop and build your club and assist with the recruitment of volunteers.

"As volunteers, many of us have been ‘thrown in the deep end’ and club mentoring can ensure we don’t do this to new volunteers," he said.

"A mentoring project offers a whole range of benefits to the club, the mentor and the mentee.

"The Club benefits by increasing volunteer numbers and ensuring volunteers are welcomed and supported.

"Mentors benefit from enhancing their own skills, passing on valuable experience and knowledge and contributing to the club’s ongoing viability.

"The person being mentored receives a more positive experience of their volunteer work, is welcomed into the club and has an opportunity to learn from an experienced club person," explained Mr Roberts.

The workshop will cover how to set up a mentoring program, benefits of mentoring and effective communication. Participants will also receive a range of resources and Club SportEd membership.

Clubs choosing to develop a mentoring project as a result of the training may also be eligible for on going support through SportEd, including a small honorarium for mentors.

Bookings for the workshop are essential and must be done by 4pm on 12 July. Bookings and more information are available from GippSport on 5135 8335. Light refreshments will be provided on arrival.
