Youth Band ambassadors depart for China and JapanThe Latrobe City Youth Band departed on Wednesday 7 January for its tour of China and Japan and prior to departing, all members signed up as ambassadors under the LatrobeFirst campaign. By Latrobe City Council - 7th January 2004 - Back to News Latrobe City Mayor Cr Graeme Middlemiss said that since Council first adopted the proposal to establish a Youth Band in 2002, the musicians had developed an excellent reputation within the City.
"As a result of a number of public performances, including the Orchestra Victoria concert, this group of talented young musicians has proven themselves to be great ambassadors locally and I am sure they will represent us with distinction in China and Japan," Cr Middlemiss said.
"Less than two years ago we did not have a band that truly represented our City and now we’ve got thirty excellent young musicians who will be playing in front of huge audiences in Taizhou and Takasago. They are a credit to themselves, their families and the Band leaders, David Williams and Lyndal Chambers," Cr Middlemiss added.
Speaking at the Band’s formal farewell luncheon held before Christmas, Cr Lisa Price praised the Band’s development and the manner in which it has represented Latrobe.
"This has been a fantastic project, not only from the viewpoint of sending the Band overseas to perform but also from the perspective of bringing together young people from across our City," Cr Price said.
The Band’s tour starts on Thursday evening with a public performance at the Mei Langfang Theatre in Taizhou and will conclude six performances later at the Takasago Cultural Hall on Sunday 18 January 2004. The Band will then return to Latrobe and will perform at Australia Day celebrations at Kernot Hall.
Before leaving, Musical Director David Williams said the Band could not wait to get on stage.
"We’ve been preparing for the tour for some time, particularly given that the original tour was postponed in April 2003 due to SARS. The Band members have been fantastic, getting better and better and I know they will do Latrobe proud," Mr Williams concluded.
