A big thank you to Latrobe’s army of volunteersEvery day, volunteers are quietly working in our community across a wide range of activities. By Latrobe City Council - 3rd May 2005 - Back to News They may be delivering Meals on Wheels to an aged resident; they may be helping out at a Planned Activity Group (formerly ADASS) outing; they may be walking children to school with the Walking School Bus program.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that without the invaluable contributions of the many hundreds of volunteers who work on Council programs, our society would be a poorer place.
"Volunteers can make life that little bit easier for many people in the municipality. A ‘We Care’ volunteer can help a senior resident get the weekly groceries or even just spend an hour or two having a chat. These small contributions of time can make a huge difference for someone who is elderly, physically unable to get out of their house on their own, or just lonely," Cr Lougheed explained.
"Volunteers help with the day to day running of many Latrobe City community groups, committees of management, sporting clubs and preschools, as well as lending their time and skills at immunisation sessions, the Visitor Information Centre, the sister city program, the Rose Garden and many other organisations and programs," Cr Lougheed added.
"This year, a new group of volunteers is also being sought. Latrobe City is hosting the Southern University Games from 4 to 7 July and we are seeking volunteers across a diverse range of positions, in order to help make the Games run smoothly.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for sporting enthusiasts and organisational masterminds to get involved in the largest annual multi sport event held in the Southern Hemisphere," Cr Lougheed explained.
"There are many positions to be filled. For example, Sports Volunteers are needed to help set the venue and equipment and collate results; Sports Administration Officers are required to help with draw and result management, reporting and display; Venue Logistics Officers are needed for the daily operational aspects of the venue including signage, equipment field set up and deconstruction; Social Program and Special Events Volunteer would be required to assist in the conduct of the social program from Opening Ceremony to the final party; the Accreditation Volunteer would assist with the dispersal of accreditation cards and showbags to the 2000 participants and the Research Volunteer would conduct Games surveys amongst the participants.
"These volunteers would be required to attend each day of the event and work from between 10 and 25 hours to fulfil the duties," Cr Lougheed added.
"We understand that to volunteer in this capacity would be a big commitment but the experience of working in such an environment would certainly be worthwhile," Cr Lougheed said.
Cr Lougheed added that volunteering should always be a two-way street.
"Whilst some aspects of volunteer work may seem thankless, monotonous, or laborious, the sense of pride and achievement or the smile on another’s face is often more than enough of a reward for the hours put in," Cr Lougheed said.
"Latrobe City sincerely thanks the volunteers working in its program, along with the countless other people volunteering their time, skills and enthusiasm for other organisations around the municipality.
"Where would we be without them?" Cr Lougheed concluded.
