Danny O'Brien announces action to address Loch Sport foreshore erosion with groynes and sand renourishment plans

Danny O'Brien announces action to address Loch Sport foreshore erosion, with groynes and sand renourishment planned, following years of community campaigning and promises from the State Labor government.

Action is to finally be taken to address erosion on the Loch Sport foreshore. The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien said a field of three groynes will be installed around the Seagull Drive boat ramp and High Dune Bluff area, with sand renourishment at Seagull Drive using sand sourced from Loch Sport marina.

Mr O'Brien said, "It is a relief to finally see this project get some traction after the State Labor government promised 'immediate works' in 2022. I want to extend my congratulations to the Loch Sport community which has been instrumental in securing this action."

"After extensive campaigning, and suffering years of consultation and reports, the Loch Sport community and frequent visitors will no doubt be overjoyed to finally see some action to stop further damage to the Lake Victoria foreshore," he said.

Mr O'Brien said the three groynes were a great start but that it is clear more will be needed in the long term. "I am not convinced that what is planned will be enough but at least it's a start. More groynes will likely be needed, but I am pleased to see that something is finally occurring."

Mr O'Brien also acknowledged Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos who visited Loch Sport on his invitation last year to see the problem for himself. "Mr Dimopoulos was not the first Environment Minister to take up my offer to see the erosion that has been occurring for many years now."

"But he is the first to actually find and implement any sort of action to address it. I will now be following the progress of these works with interest and look forward to seeing work begin in spring this year," he said.
