Kids ‘Go For Their Lives’ At Official LaunchThe Kids – ‘Go for your life’ initiative was officially launched in Latrobe City at a presentation held at Elizabeth St Primary School in Moe on Thursday 22 March 2007 By Latrobe City - 27th March 2007 - Back to News In attendance on the day were Latrobe City councillor Lisa Price and MP Russell North, as well as representatives from the Department of Health and Services, Department of Education, Latrobe Regional Hospital, and the Latrobe Community Health Service.
Kids – ‘Go for your life’ seeks to create healthier Victorian children who enjoy healthy eating and physical activity every day by endorsing six key health messages.
The messages taken home from the presentation at Elizabeth St primary School were ‘Tap into water every day’, encouraging participants to increase their water consumption; ‘Plant fruit and vegetables in your lunch box’, encouraging an increase in healthier options to fill up tummies at lunchtime; ‘Limit ‘sometimes’ foods’, teaching children that energy dense food and drinks should only be eaten every now and then and not part of every day diets; ‘Move, Play and Go’, encouraging children to be more physically active; ‘Turn off, Switch to Play’, targeting a reduction in time spent doing sedentary activities like watching television; and ‘Stride and Ride’ encouraging children to walk and ride to school.
Latrobe City councillor, Lisa Price, said that the day was a hub of excitement and movement, with local kindergartens and play groups joining the primary school and officials in fun, health focused activities throughout the day. Children also attended educational sessions provided by the ‘Go for your life’ mobile education centre.
"Some of the activities enjoyed on the day included the very popular ‘taste and try’ session where participants were encouraged to try some tasty fruit and vegetables. A crazy critters activity where playing with your food was allowed and children were seen creating fantastic creatures out of their snacks was a highlight," Cr Price said.
Kids – ‘Go for your life’ manager, Dr Suzy Honisett, said that promoting healthy eating and physical activity will benefit children in a number of ways.
"There is no doubt that children who eat a nutritious diet and spend time being active will experience better concentration and learning, improved confidence, and have more energy to play. Physical benefits also include healthy teeth and bones, a healthy weight, improved muscle development, increased fitness, and improved posture, coordination and flexibility," Dr Honisett said.
Cr Lisa Price said the introduction of the program, which is being conducted locally in partnership with Latrobe City, helps highlight the growing concern over health and fitness levels among young people.
"Statistics have shown that children are spending twice the amount of time in ‘screen time’ than being active; that as few as 10% of children are walking and riding to school, which in the 1970’s was as high as 80%; and more than half of children have twice the recommended daily intake of high fat, high sugar foods and drinks in their lunchbox.
"Addressing these issues is important for future community wellbeing and Latrobe City is proud to be in partnership to help drive local action for Kids – ‘Go for your life’. It isn’t just physical health which is being affected by poor dietary habits, with studies showing that between 47 – 74% of 10 to 12 year olds have reported varying levels of body image dissatisfaction over a nine month period of time. There are also implications on the mental health and wellbeing of our younger generation which we have to think about," Cr Price concluded.
Kids – ‘Go for your life’ is dedicated to helping communities improve the health of Victorian children aged 0-12 years by supporting child care centres, kindergartens, family day care and primary schools, as well as local communities and families to teach children healthy habits at an early age, allowing them to take the principles of good health into adulthood.
The Kids – Go for your life program is a state wide initiative funded by the State Government and managed by Victorian branch of Diabetes Australia, and the Cancer Council Victoria, conducted locally in partnership with Latrobe City.
