Gippsland.Com Seeks New Owner/OperatorExpressions of interest are sought from organizations who may wish to continue the current operation, or integrate Gippsland.com functions with a similar internet activity. By Gippsland.com - 8th May 2006 - Back to News The key elements of the Gippsland.com operations include technical (website development and web hosting), content management including news, classifieds, business directory listings, etc and the administration of subscriptions to the business directory. A number of industry-based "mini-portals" are linked to Gippsland.com including innovation.gippsland.com, timber.gippsland.com safety.gippsland.com, and golf.gippsland.com, along with township websites for Boolarra, Buchan, Cann River, Churchill and Stratford.
Some 600 Gippsland-based businesses are listed on the business directory providing the primary revenue for the regional internet portal. Gippsland.com receives some 18,000+ internet visitors and over 500 e-mail inquiries per month to the listed businesses.
GREEN Inc – the Gippsland Regional Economy and Ecology Network - has owned and operated Gippsland.com for the past three years, but is not appropriately resourced both to sustain operations at its Technology & Business Development Centre at Churchill, and to operate Gippsland.com.
The resources available to GREEN Inc are such that revenue stream from the business directory has sustained day-to-day operations over the past three years – but not provided for sufficient resources to appropriately market and fully develop the Gippsland.com concept. A new owner/operator may well be able to bring greater technical and marketing skill to the current operation.
To successfully develop Gippsland.com, an alternative operator will need:
- technical IT skills to manage the software and hardware;
- marketing skills to present Gippsland.com to strategic stakeholder groups and the business communities of Gippsland, and increase the number of subscribers to the business directory;
- Sufficient capital to upgrade the hardware and software as needed and to conduct the marketing campaign.
There may be advantages to a consortium, rather than a single organisation, taking over operation of Gippsland.com.
The decision not to continue as owner and operator has been difficult, and only taken after exploring the options available to GREEN Inc. to market, expand and redevelop Gippsland.com.
