Feedback for Victorian Education Inquiry extended to 15 December 2023 to gather more support and solutions to resolve challenges

The State Education Inquiry's submission deadline extended to Dec 15. Over 220 submissions received, highlighting concerns, including staff shortages and student welfare.

The time period for submissions for the Inquiry into the state education system has been extended to Friday 15 December by the Legal and Social Issues Committee. The Inquiry has to date received over 220 submissions from students, teachers, families, and administrators outlining their experiences and concerns with the state education system.

Rising educational crisis

At the time of the Inquiry's establishment there were nearly 1000 teaching jobs advertised by the Department of Education and many schools are struggling trying plug holes. However, today's Herald Sun reported school staff shortages had now reached more than 2100, which includes 1,200 teachers.

The Victorian Auditor-General's Office (VAGO) report found "the Department is not effectively protecting the health and wellbeing of its school principals". The Inquiry established by The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath, will examine learning outcomes in state school Prep to Year 12 students, impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic on student learning and wellbeing, and importantly, the state of teaching profession including teacher retention.

Prioritising educational support

Ms Bath, a former teacher said, "Better support for students and teachers need to be prioritised. My objective is to seek the best outcomes for student education and wellbeing and have an education system that is designed and resourced to let teachers teach and prevent burnout. I encourage Victorians, whether from the inside or as a parent to provide feedback to this Inquiry."

Submission can be made on the Parliament of Victoria's website - Inquiry into the state education system in Victoria.
A report to parliament with findings and recommendations for the government is due by 25 June 2024.
