Mays Exhibition Continues With Debate On Street Art

Last week two local secondary schools presented an exciting and informed debate on street art around the current exhibition May’s: The May Lane Street Art Project now on at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.

The debate was part of the Education and Public Programs events.

Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that debating teams from Kurnai College and Lowanna College put forward convincing arguments both for and against the contention that street art should be shown in a gallery.

"Both teams made a clear distinction between vandalism, or tagging, and the valuable contribution that street art makes to contemporary art movements.

"The affirmative team from Lowanna: Tylor Arnold, Georgina O’connor, Mikka Van Opijnen and Megan Burns pointed out the benefits of installing street art in galleries. They used aspects of the exhibition to underline their clearly expressed points.

"The team from Kurnai: Alec Welsh, Jade Bunker, Sarah Darling and Sarah Mayo spoke against the contention, by arguing that the context of the street was integral to the conception, creation, and reception of street art," Ms Adams said.

"With help from the Gallery’s Education Officer, Julie Rosewarne-Foster, teachers, Karen Anders from Kurnai and Emma Arthur and Ann-Mary Ryan from Lowanna, were able to help the teams to prepare their presentations. This advance preparation resulted in a wonderfully insightful evening for the audience," Ms Adams concluded.

May’s: The May Lane Street Art Project is showing at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until 24 June.
