National Tree Day a growing successThe Bass Coast’s National Tree Day 2016 event hosted by the Cape Woolamai Coast Action Group was successful. People people from all ages came together to share the joy of replanting a coastal environment. Read the full details in this article. By news@gippsland - 28th August 2016 - Back to News Bass Coast’s National Tree Day 2016 event was held in Cape Woolamai on a sunny and beautiful winters day, with people of all ages coming together to share the joy of replanting a coastal environment.
The event, hosted on Sunday, 31 July by the Cape Woolamai Coast Action Group, saw a mix of permanent and non-permanent residents, including parents and children, taking part in the event.
"We planted 450 indigenous plants in the foreshore reserve south of the ‘Woolamai House’ development," Cape Woolamai Coast Action’s Secretary, Kate McLaughlin, said.
"We worked at a site that has recently been reclaimed through realignment of a property fence. There was also a very large Pine tree that needed to be removed before we could undertake the planting.
"The removal of the Pine tree was funded by Bass Coast Shire Council, and we are actively seeking grant money to remove three more Pines in the foreshore adjacent to our planting site."
The volunteers finished the event with a morning tea of freshly baked treats.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said the planting will help increase biodiversity within the area, with the foreshore acting as part of a wildlife corridor which runs north to Newhaven and south to the actual cape and beyond.
"This corridor is extremely important for the wildlife in the Bass Coast region as it encourages genetic diversity within each species, as well as providing much needed habitat," Cr Crugnale said.
Cape Woolamai Coast Action meets Saturday mornings at 8.00am most months throughout the year, and is currently in its 16th year of undertaking volunteer environmental works in the foreshore.
"Their dedicated and passionate work has had a great impact on the natural landscape that locals and tourists come to enjoy, and we thank them for hosting yet another successful National Tree Day event in Bass Coast," Cr Crugnale said.
