Latrobe Synthetic Sports Field Pavilion Officially OpenedLatrobe Synthetic Sports Field Pavilion was officially opened on Wednesday. By Portal Admin - 12th November 2018 - Back to News The Latrobe Synthetic Sports Field Pavilion was officially opened on Wednesday by partners and stakeholders, outlining the truly collaborative nature of the project.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White OAM, said the project saw the delivery of a modern multi-use two-storey facility to provide amenities to the existing synthetic field, as well as a sports specific classroom and tutorial space for Federation University.
"This facility has long been a vision for Council, the hockey community and Federation University. Being able to cut the ribbon is not just the culmination of several years of planning, design and construction works but of community engagement and relationship-building to deliver the community’s vision.
"That vision was for a space that served more than one purpose. The building is not just change rooms, although, of course it offers that function for players – both male and female – and officials. But it also offers the opportunity for learning and community interaction, for meetings and social occasions and will no doubt be welcomed as a proud addition to the Churchill community and beyond," Cr White said.
"We know that provision of quality and well-appointed infrastructure can see an increase in community participation in sport. The Latrobe Valley Hockey Association is now able to host significant events such as the Gippsland Hockey Championships and as a result can attract further elite tournaments to our City.
"The movement towards multi-purpose facilities provides both opportunities and challenges. In this instance, each stakeholder wants to ensure their own specific needs are met, but as the project manager, it was Council’s major projects team’s role to look at the project to bring together the individual pieces of the completed jigsaw.
"What we’ve delivered is a facility, built by a local firm (Rick Doultree Builders) and using local contractors that will attract elite level sports fixtures for a growing sporting association. It will promote and support further involvement of children and the wider community in active recreation and sport and it will serve as an education and training centre that also provides infrastructure to meet the diverse needs of our community," Cr White concluded.
