Many schools are planning a variety of activities and will line the road as the baton passes.

Wonthaggi Campus of the South Coast Christian College, one of the smallest schools in the Shire with 34 students, will be a focal point of the Relay.

The baton will start its Bass Coast run at the College on Wednesday 1 March.

Head of Wonthaggi Campus, Carolanne Moore, said the school was very excited to have the privilege of being the starting point for the baton relay.

"The staff, children and parents are really looking forward to it," said Ms Moore.

On the evening of 1 March, over 600 students from Cowes, San Remo and Newhaven Primary Schools and Newhaven College will form a giant conga line and sing Aussie songs on Cowes Foreshore.

As the baton starts on its second day through the Shire, Newhaven Recreation Reserve will host a pre school sausage sizzle and entertainment by Newhaven College.

Bass Coast Shire Council has also helped local schools to paint welcome flags, which will be displayed in the commercial areas of the Shire.

"These will be used again during other special events in the Shire," said Council’s Arts & Leisure and Commonwealth Games Coordinator, Jenny Churchill.
