CCTV Project Rolled Out across Morwell CBD

CCTV cameras installed at locations around the Morwell CBD to increase community perceptions of safety as well as act as a potential crime deterrent.

A number of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at locations around the Morwell CBD to increase community perceptions of safety as well as act as a potential crime deterrent. Project funding of $233,000 has been allocated through the Australian Government Community Development Grants Programme.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said the cameras would provide an increased level of confidence for residents, businesses and visitors.

"Increasing visual surveillance of the CBD precinct will afford improved public safety. The cameras will also help police to respond to emerging safety issues. The community can go about their daily business with an increased sense of security.

"The 19 cameras are being installed at various locations: Commercial Road, including the bus interchange, Princes Drive, including the train station, Buckley Street and main carpark and the subway as well as a number of other streets. There will also be an upgrade to the system feeding back in to the Morwell Police Station so that vision is clearer," Cr White said.

Cr White added that there were numerous benefits to the community from installing CCTV.

"We know that the cameras are a tool for helping to deter crime and anti-social behaviour and, of course, they can detect a crime in action. This enables police either to intervene or to gather evidence for court proceedings.

"But more than that, the installation of the cameras means there is a perception of improved safety in the area so that residents, local traders and service providers, visitors and public transport users can feel comfortable when at work, attending an appointment, walking to the Gallery or Rose Garden or simply catching a train.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester the Australian Government invested $233,000 to improve public safety and deter crime.

"The new cameras will improve security and act as a crime deterrent, while also assisting police to identify and prosecute offenders if and when incidents do in public areas," Mr Chester said.

"Police will be able to respond faster thanks to a real-time feed from the new cameras directly to Morwell Police Station."

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government invested $233,000 in the project to improve public safety and deter crime.

"The new cameras will improve security and act as a crime deterrent, while also assisting police to identify and prosecute offenders if and when relevant incidents do occur in public areas," Mr McCormack said.

Cr White added that more people accessing the Morwell CBD in safety and confidence in turn means more business for the area’s traders, services, and recreational and cultural spaces.

"We would like to thank the Federal Government for the provision of funds for this project. Our CBDs should be accessible and safe so that community members can undertake the social and economic, recreation or cultural activities that they want to," Cr White concluded.

A Morwell CBD lighting study is currently underway to maximise the benefits of the CCTV project. Installation of the CCTV equipment will be complete by 31 August.

An official launch took place at 11am on 3 September at Legacy Place, Commercial Rd Morwell.
