WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s premier junior regional championships - the V/Line Cup and Youth Girls Shield - commence in the Latrobe Valley on Monday.

For more than a decade V/Line has been the naming rights partner of these championships

and have contributed extensively in providing the opportunity for young players to challenge

themselves against the best in their age group across regional Victoria.

An important part of the player talent development pathway since 1946, the four day V/Line

Cup championship will be played for the first time outside of Melbourne, with the Latrobe Valley

hosting games in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.

Worksafe AFL Victoria County Football Manager Jim Cail said a change of date and location for the

championships has brought renewed interest to the yearly event.

"Holding the V/Line Cup and the Youth Girls Shield in the Latrobe Valley is a great initiative, with

outstanding support being provided by the Latrobe City Council," Cail said.

"Some of the most outstanding players who are eventually drafted to AFL clubs have been through

this programme including last year’s number one in the AFL National Draft, Paddy McCartin, who

played for Geelong Falcons in 2011 in the V/Line Cup."

Over the course of the week twenty teams will represent the various TAC Cup development

regions.

"As well as providing an opportunity for the best young players to show their talents on the field,

the V/Line Cup and Youth Girls Shield enables coaching staff to provide extensive development

programs," Cail said.

"All of the Youth Girls Shield players will partake in development programs highlighting the many

ways in which they can be part of community football and also reach their full potential as a player.

"The V/Line Cup players will be provided with information on the pathways which await them in

the TAC Cup club programs over the next few years."

Latrobe City Council’s deputy mayor, Councillor Peter Gibbons, said the tournament was a great

starting point for up and coming football talent.

"The V/Line Cup and Youth Girls Shield are top quality competitions. Hosting games here in

Latrobe City is testament to our developing reputation as a premier regional venue for sports and

leisure events. We hope local footy fans turn out to support and encourage these young players

and perhaps our own local talent will be inspired to challenge themselves to improve and aim

high," Cr Gibbons said.

Latrobe Valley residents are encouraged to take the chance to get along to have a look at the

future champions of the game.
