Latrobe Valley Schools Take On Bullying

Eight schools across the Latrobe Valley have registered for and/or started the Victorian Government eSmart initiative to combat cyber bullying, said Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe.

By Russell Northe - 10th July 2012 - Back to News

"Bullying has no boundaries and has been misunderstood for many years," Mr Northe said.

"Too often we see cases of bullying extending through the social media to the home – 24 hours a day – and we are committed to giving our young people a real voice in standing up to bullying and saying no to being a bystander.

"Bullying can and does destroy lives, and this is why the Victorian Coalition Government has committed $14.5 million over four years to the Stamp Out Bullying policy and $124.4 million to strengthen and broaden the primary welfare officer initiative to take a proactive role in working with students, teachers and parents to address bullying.

The Victorian Government is leading the way on cyber bullying, and I congratulate those Latrobe Valley schools who have joined $10.5 million program eSmart program to be proactive in stamping out cyber bullying, Mr Northe said.

Sacred Heart, Kosciusko Street, Liddiard Road, Yinnar, Churchill North, St Vincent de Paul, Tyers and Yallourn North Primary Schools are among almost 900 government, Catholic and Independent schools across Victoria participating in this program, Mr Northe said.

The eSmart program is a partnership between the Victorian Government and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation and is being rolled out in every Victorian government school and 300 selected Catholic and independent schools over the next three years.

The program, which provides each school with $2000 to help start their eSmart journey, raises awareness of online safety and reducing online risks, including cyber bullying, sexting and protecting their digital reputation.

To register to participate in eSmart, or for more information, go to www.esmart.org.au.
