Basketball Clinic in Churchill is a successLatrobe City Pacers star, Vashon Weaver, shared the secrets of his success with Latrobe City’s young people at a basketball clinic held at Churchill Youth Action Centre recently. By Latrobe City Council - 10th March 2004 - Back to News The young people involved in the clinic participated in a variety of Latrobe City Pacers’ training methods and were taught a wide range of handball skills, training regimes and ways to practice basketball techniques individually and in groups.
Mr Weaver spoke with the young people about sport and life in general, stressing the importance of commitment, dedication and eating a healthy diet, whilst discouraging the use of drugs and alcohol. Mr Weaver also explained the importance of stretching prior to playing or training for any sport, and discussed the importance of cooling down afterwards.
Youth Services Officer, Tanya Harrington, said that young people in the local area learn a great deal when community leaders and local icons take the time to talk with them about their personal experiences and achievements.
"Having inspirational sports people, such as Vashon Weaver, talk to young people in the local area promotes the benefits that can be gained from participating in sport. It encourages more young people to play sport in the local community, and it highlights the benefits that come from leading a healthy and active lifestyle," Ms Harrington said.
"The young people of Churchill who attended the clinic were very excited to have such a positive role model teaching them tips on basketball and life in general. With the support of local businesses and community icons, Youth Action Centres can provide Latrobe City Youths with interesting and safe places to meet up and spend time away from their homes."
All people between 12 and18 years of age are welcome to attend the Youth Action Centres throughout Latrobe City.
