‘Which Is My Best Side?’ At The Latrobe Regional Gallery

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition by two exciting emerging local artists: Lux Cabatingan and Maria-Luisa Marino; titled ‘Which is My Best Side?’

Latrobe Regional Gallery director, Jacqui Hemsley said that the works in this exhibition use the photographic portrait as a springboard to explore cultural and personal identity.

"Lux Cabatingan focuses on informal portraits of young people to portray issues including fantasy and the ideal as perceived and glamorised within contemporary pop culture," Ms Hemsley explained.

"Using found objects and images which represent her family history, Maria-Luisa Marino explores issues relating to migrant cultures and the struggles maintaining their identity and how they take sanctuary in an idealised life before immigration," Ms Hemsley said.

"Triggering the idyllic past of their homeland, the 'New Australians' surround themselves with photographs, religious paraphernalia and intimate items that evoke memories and a sense of belonging. Marino believes these items allow migrant Italians to experience some stability in their identities, even if it's clinging to a reality of a past that no longer exists, even in the old country,"

"The photographic portrait is a transitory space between a reality and ideal; a powerful media that allows us to mourn the loss of the past or curiously peek into the fields of possibility. These two artists have created sensitivity through this media," Ms Hemsley concluded.

Both artists are graduates of the Monash University Fine Arts program and both are local contemporary artists that work with a variety of media including textile, photography, oil painting and embroidery.

The ‘Which is My Best Side’ exhibition officially opened on Tuesday 17 July and is set to continue until 29 July 2007.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is open 7 days, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Gallery on 5128 5700 or email lrg@latrobe.vic.gov.au.
