Chemical Collection DayHave you got any unwanted chemicals lying around? Saturday 2 July is Chemical Collection Day for Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire residents. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th June 2005 - Back to News The day, provided by EcoRecycle Victoria in partnership with Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire Councils, will include the collection of all eligible materials free of charge at:
· Bass Coast Shire Council
Council Depot, Cnr Dunsmore & Settlement Roads, Cowes
1.30pm – 4.30pm
· South Gippsland Shire Council
Council Depot, 80 Yarragon Road, Leongatha
8.00am – 11.00am
Residents from Bass Coast Shire can take their material to the South Gippsland depot and vice versa.
Eligible materials include old and unwanted paints, batteries, motor oil, gas cylinders, insect sprays, photographic chemicals, brake fluids and cleaners.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Management Officer, Pete Roberts, says EcoRecycle Victoria’s Household Chemical Collection service aims to minimise the danger of accidental poisoning in homes and reduce the risk to the environment.
"There is no doubt that leaving unwanted household chemicals in the garage, garden shed, bathroom cabinet, kitchen cupboards or laundry increases the risk of accidents around the home.
"The Victorian Poisons Information Centre receives over 41,000 calls a year seeking assistance from people who have come into contact with poisons. Over 16,800 of those calls are related to children.
"Putting chemicals like paint and solvents in the rubbish bin to go to landfill can also cause significant environmental problems. And tipping them down stormwater drains means they find their way into our waterways damaging plants and animal habitats. Dumping chemicals down sinks or toilets is also illegal and damaging to the sewerage network," explained Mr Roberts.
Mr Roberts says the collected materials will be recycled or safely disposed of by experts.
"This special collection service, which is only provided every couple of years can give parents peace of mind by providing the chance to get old and unwanted products like paint, poisons or pest sprays out of their homes.
"For these reasons, I strongly encourage householders to take advantage of the free drop-off location," said Mr Roberts.
The most commonly deposited items are paints and oils. People can bring in as many items as they wish, however, 20 litre containers are the maximum size accepted.
Once collected, the materials are treated and then recycled or disposed of safely by the specialist team running the EcoRecycle collection.
EcoRecycle Victoria is the state government agency charged to protect the environment by reducing waste, promoting the sustainable use of resources, and better managing the disposal of material that cannot be diverted from the waste stream for productive use.
