2010 Doug Moran Portrait Prize: Latrobe Valley People’S Choice Gives The Nod To RealismMore than 3,700 people have visited the Latrobe Regional Galley to view the 2010 Doug Moran Portrait Prize during the last two months. By Latrobe City - 7th April 2011 - Back to News While viewing the exhibition, many visitors took the opportunity to cast a vote for their favourite portrait.
The Moran Prizes, comprised of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize, are a major event on the Australian arts calendar. The Moran Family and the Moran Arts Foundation are the benefactors of the annual Moran Prizes, which offer collective prize monies of up to $300,000. The Latrobe Regional Gallery was the only Victorian venue to display 35 paintings from the 2010 competition.
Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that there was a clear Latrobe Valley People’s Choice winner.
"Visitors to Latrobe Regional Gallery voted for ‘Self Portrait’ by Robert Eley. Other favourites in the exhibition included ‘Animal Nelson’ by Guy Maestri and ‘Sarah’ by Hong Fu.
"Robert Eley’s painting shows exceptional drawing and technical skills. It clearly made a connection with the audience. Perhaps this was not only because of the high degree of realism but also because Robert was trying to explore his feelings about where he is now and the decisions and changes the future holds for him; thoughts and emotions that we can all easily relate to," Ms Adams explained.
The winner of the 2010 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize was Michael Zavros with a portrait of his daughter titled ‘Phoebe is dead/McQueen’.
Two Highly commended Awards were made to Robin Eley (our people’s choice selection) and Justin Cooper for his work titled ‘Blossom Cooper (dyptich)’
Finalists in the 2011 Portrait Prize are currently being selected and will be able to be viewed online 14 April at www.moranprizes.com.au
The Moran Arts Foundation generously supports two high profile portraiture and photography competitions attracting enormous interest from artists and the public alike.
