with a working gallery.

Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that the visit was aimed at providing a real insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes in terms of exhibiting, storing and conserving artwork.

"This program was specifically designed by Dr Julie Rosewarne Foster, a member of the gallery’s education and public program team, to ‘bring to life’ a particular unit of study that is required within the VCE curriculum. A number of schools, including Kurnai College have taken advantage of this unique opportunity.

"Students were given ‘hands-on’ experience and understanding about exhibition design, artwork and conservation, and the presentation of art at the gallery. To ensure they got a real feel for the everyday work that goes on behind the scenes, gallery staff members talked to the students about materials and techniques, potential hazards and possible damage that may occur.

"In the temperature-controlled storage room, they heard about the importance of using protective gloves to lift, hang, handle and store artworks. They were shown different types of storage boxes, including some that had been created especially at the gallery for larger artworks, and they learned about protecting artworks from different types of mould as well as the necessity of using acid-free paper," Ms Adams explained.

Korumburra VCE art teacher, Catherine McDonald, said that her students had gained a great deal of valuable, practical knowledge from the gallery visit.

"The gallery staff members were able to offer hands-on education for the students. Getting to tour the gallery, both the exhibition space and the back-of-house rooms, was a great way of developing the students’ understanding of their course. The students got to see first-hand how a large work of art is stored in large hanging frames, to learn why wearing cotton gloves is a must to avoid transfer of oils and dirt to an artwork, to see the damage caused by using the wrong type of masking tape. All these experiences in a practical setting are much more valuable than reading from text-books," Ms McDonald explained.

The education program at the gallery was specifically tailored to the current VCE study designs and offered schools the opportunity to book in for seminars in VCE art, studio arts as well as psychology and visual perception.

The gallery also offers programs for primary students across the curriculum – including social studies and literature as well as the visual arts.
