The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs has given the go-ahead for Bass Coast Shire Council to finish constructing the Inverloch Foreshore Pathway.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 2nd March 2007 - Back to News

The Minister’s decision comes seven months after work was stopped at the site when it was identified as having cultural heritage significance.

Council’s Acting Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the recommencing of work would come with some conditions.

"Representatives from the Victorian Boonerwrung Elders Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation will be present on site during all excavation works.

"Any further significant Aboriginal heritage objects discovered will be documented by a qualified archaeologist and the details provided to Aboriginal Affairs Victoria within 14 days."

Mr Piasente advised that the cost of the project had increased from $260,000 to $285,000.

"Works are scheduled to start in mid March and are expected to be completed in June."

The Inverloch Foreshore Pathway works include a 700m shared concrete pathway between Venus St and Abbott St, Inverloch as well as the construction of a car parking area midway along and a further car park at the Venus St end.

VicRoads is contributing $116,000 for the path and Council $169,000 for the two car parks and the remainder of the works.

The path will provide a link for cyclists and pedestrians, and connects features such as the Rotary Centenary Park, BBQ area and soon to be constructed fitness stations and car parks.
