‘Light Up Latrobe’ Heralds Christmas Spirit In City google.com.au The ‘Light up Latrobe’ Christmas lights competition heralds the arrival of the festive season in Latrobe City. By Latrobe City Council - 10th December 2009 - Back to News So for those residents and businesses who enjoy the thrill of decorating their properties and premises, now is the time to register for the 2009 listing and competition.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price said that ‘Light up Latrobe’ was an opportunity for the business and wider community to come together in a festive spirit in the lead up to Christmas.
"Each year the Latrobe community puts its homes and businesses on show for what has grown into a highly-anticipated tradition for many families and individuals. Young and old alike are thrilled at the time, effort and imagination that goes into creating a light display. The ‘Light up Latrobe’ competition and listing allows some recognition for that effort.
"With the effects of climate change on everybody’s mind, and in particular given that Latrobe City is the hub of the electricity generation industry of the state, we are careful to strike a balance between being ‘environmentally aware’ and encouraging residents and businesses to have fun with their displays.
"Entrants this year are asked to provide council with details of how their displays reflect energy conservation. Participants will be asked how they are reducing their power needs during their display times. Perhaps, this may be through the use of LED lighting, by limiting the time the displays are on, by reducing internal power needs, or by using non-powered displayed and recycled products," Cr Price explained.
Latrobe City’s acting events coordinator, Wendy Hrynyszyn, said that residents and businesses do not have to enter the competition to be a part of ‘Light up Latrobe’.
"If you have a display you are proud of, you can let people know your location by registering your address details using the registration form published in the Latrobe Valley Express.
"The ‘Light up Latrobe’ residents’ competition is sponsored by local businesses Stockland Traralgon Shopping Centre and Moe TM&H Home Timber and Hardware. Stockland Traralgon Shopping Centre will be donating twelve $50 gift cards to the winners, and Moe TM&H Timber and Hardware will be providing $50 worth of LED lighting to the winners," Ms Hrynyszyn said.
"The ‘Christmas Shop Window Competition’ for businesses is sponsored by Committee for Moe for $300, Advance Morwell for $100 and Business@Traralgon, for $100, and a generous free advertising prize from the Latrobe Valley Express.
"The Latrobe Valley Express will publish listings from registrations of where to see ‘Light up Latrobe’ at regular intervals throughout the month of December.
"Judging of the Christmas Light Competition and Shop Window Competition will take place on the weekend of 12 and 13 December. A list of winners will be announced in the Latrobe Valley Express on Monday 21 December," Ms Hrynyszyn concluded.
Further information will be published in the Latrobe Valley Express during coming weeks. In the meantime, those wishing to find out more should contact the Latrobe City Events team on 1300 367 700.
