Students Step Out to School

Step out, get on your bike, grab that scooter or skate board! That is the message going out to children across Bass Coast as part of the 13th Annual Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) on Friday, 18 May.

By Bass Coast - 11th May 2012 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council is throwing its support behind the day, to encourage students to embrace the healthy initiative.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said the day was a fun way to remind families of the benefits of regular walking. We know that walking regularly can make a huge difference to people’s physical and mental health," said Mr Piasente.

"Walk Safely to School Day also promotes road safety messages and helps to reduce the amount of traffic around our schools. We believe it is important to support schools to promote these important messages to their students.

"Mr Piasente said that Bass Valley, Cowes, Inverloch, Powlett River and San Remo Primary Schools had already signed up for the day. Council is supporting the schools to put on a healthy breakfast for the students when they arrive at school to ‘fuel’ them for the day.

"We recognise the importance of living in an active community with healthy eating habits.

"So we want to remind parents, teachers and carers that a healthy breakfast, coupled with exercise on the way to school, gives children an ideal start to the day’s learning. Providing breakfast helps to make the link between active lifestyles and healthy eating," explained Mr Piasente.

Student’s family and friends are also being encouraged to ‘walk’ to school on the day.

Walk Safely to School Day is a national event, hosted by the Pedestrian Council of Australia and supported by the Australian Government, and all State, Territory and Local Governments.
