Latrobe City senior business development officer, Leo Billington, said that this popular workshop is designed to assist and guide people to be more analytical when it comes to financial matters and making more informed decisions.

"Owning and managing a small business requires a great deal of financial preparation and planning. There are many who have a desire to be their own boss and pursue a long held ambition to be self employed by operating and managing a small to medium size business. It is therefore important that the excitement and enthusiasm of going into business is supported by a thorough understanding of financial terminology and the functions of financial statements. Participants in this annual workshop have always found it to be very useful," Mr Billington said.

"Those who attend this workshop will learn how to review business procedures and minimise financial risks by discussing business performance in relation to everyday business and planned investment requirements, while understanding future budget planning and preparation.

"The workshop is funded by the Minister for Consumer Affairs from the Estates Guarantee Fund and coordinated by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development as the ‘Under New Management’ program. It deals with the essential financial elements to be understood when operating a business, and the aim is to improve business practice," Mr Billington explained.

"When this workshop was held last year, attendees were made aware of the importance of constantly monitoring and assessing how their businesses were performing financially.

"Monitoring cash flow matched against projected and actual financial forecasts is very critical when in business. Monthly and annual trends can be documented subsequently improving business practices while being proactive to minimise financial risks," Mr Billington said.

The Financial Controls for Small Business workshop commences at 5.30pm on Thursday 11 October, concluding at 7.30pm. The cost of the workshop is $10 and includes a complimentary workbook produced by the Victorian Government specifically to help anyone involved in business.

Bookings are essential. For further information, please contact Leo Billington, telephone (m) 0407 541 258.
